run

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

yeah, I'm, I'm excited for this one.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Well, let's, uh, let's see what happens. Uh, we'll get going in three, two, welcome to the mobile armored podcast show. The podcast that transforms into a snowblower. My name is Adam Moore alongside my cohost and best friend, PJ McNerney. How's it going PJ?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I'm doing well, man. I say this every week cause I'm excited and I know a lot of our bread and butter is like really crapping on episodes, especially when they don't make any sense.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

That is our entire bread and butter.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

It is. But the thing of it is, this is that it's like. He gets to be a little bit despondent at times where it's like, Hey was this really what we're watching? And did we like misremember? Like That stuff was good. And what I'm excited about today's episode is, you know, You know, it ranks up there for me as one of the best. stuff makes sense. There's good use of mask powers, there's good use of vehicles. Venom's a credible threat. I actually like it when we can have an episode like this. And we can talk about, oh yeah, this is actually why we remember it being so cool. Yeah, I mean, there's enough for a bread and butter in here, but it's nice to get some meat and potatoes in there as well, so we're not just eating carbs.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Very well said. I did leave this episode feeling much less despondent than I usually do. So I'm feeling good about this one as well. This is episode 20, by the way. So we only have 55 more. To go. Maybe they've hit their stride now by episode 20 and really have a handle on things. I'll say that in the episode, the mechanics of it all work. Like all the story beats work. I think there's specific choices from time to time are a bit questionable from a writing standpoint, but, if there's a formula for writing a mask episode for the stakes, the complications, things like that, the act structure, this one is the model by which to, to base an episode on.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I agree.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Folks, it's episode 20, Cold Fever. During a trip to Alaska, Bruce Sato falls ill from a terrible virus, and Mask finds that venom has the only cure. Not, Not quite accurate, but, close enough. We open, and it's a blizzard. And we find Bruce Sato in a dashing pink slash maroon outfit, driving a sled pulled by barking Huskies, just like Bruce does in a blizzard. Off in the distance though, he sees a man with no shirt, no shoes, kind of staggering in the snow. Very startling image there. Bruce tries to get him to go under a blanket, but the man says he's too hot. And Bruce says, it's 65 degrees below zero. How cold is that, PJ?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Alright we're going to hop the science quota right off the bat. So there's a technical term for negative 65 degrees. And scientifically speaking, that's fucking freezing,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Okay,

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

like beyond fucking freezing. So I, I did a tiny bit of research and at negative 45 degrees below zero, A cup of water freezes in about four minutes. So, at negative 65 this is a, like, you're just forget it. Like, If you're out exposed you're gonna be gone soon. And as a fun little fact uh, so people know, negative 40 Fahrenheit and negative 40 Celsius are actually the same temperature. Because at that level, it doesn't really matter for humans anymore. Like it's just, it's just that cool. And we're below that. And to be sure, like Alaska has been known to get to negative 80 in the past in certain regions. So negative 65 is really cool. plausible I don't know if Bruce is flexing because he doesn't want to wear a hat and he's just wearing like this, like um,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

A scarf. Not really Just casually wrapped around like you would on a yacht. You know, um, He's wearing, a white shirt. Maybe it's thermals, but he's just got like a windbreaker on like just a pink maroon windbreaker on and his gloves are like magician gloves. You know, It's them. They're like the sort of white, like you'd be wearing with a tuxedo or that Mickey Mouse might be wearing. He has goggles, but no hat, no muffler, his jacket's open This guy is not prepared for the weather at all.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah it's funny. Like he's got his, like his arm around the dude and then he's like putting his hand on his chest, which I felt was a little bit handsy. Honestly, like. and I was like, you know, and his, his line there was pretty funny to me, which is like, you are hot. How can that be? Don't worry. I'll get you back to town, which I was like, I think Bruce is a very complicated man in the eighties. Um, we've seen this, this, whatever this vacationing with Matt is. We've seen this like Vanessa, Bruce, Trist thing that is like, so,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

You will all see the photo on Instagram, but there is a very Brokeback Mountain feel to what's going on here. But, Bruce does stay good on his word. He brings the man back to town. We cut to Scott and T Bob, who are walking through this snow covered town. T Bob, wearing a scarf and a hat, having trouble walking on the ice. Does this mean that Alex has Not just programmed pain and fear and hiccups into this robot, but also to experience bitter cold as well. Right.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

going to ever put that past Alex to have done. I was trying to like, okay, Can I justify this at all? It's possible that his oil is freezing and his joints actually aren't working that well. That all said there are better solutions than having T Bob wear a scarf, which isn't going to help at all. But we should note Scott is wearing a different outfit. He's prepared for the winter weather. Sans hat.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

He's not wearing a hat either, and I am quite pleased that Matt didn't just send him out into the cold wearing his t shirt and jeans. Scott explains to T Bob that Dad learned Venom is up here, and so he and Bruce came to check it out. And I guess, bringing your kid to sub zero temperatures is a fun thing to do as well. But, this is actually the first confirmation, PJ, of your theory that Matt goes to places because he's been kinda tipped off that Venom is there.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Alright, yeah, it's actually kind of interesting. And again, I in another world, it'd be awesome to see an episode where they think Venom's there and they're not, but there's some other thing they need to do. But let's say, let's assume this theory is confirmed. Why did Matt bring Scott to yet another place with a suspected terrorist on the loose? This doesn't feel like the right move to be making as a father. Would you do that, Adam?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

No, I would not. And also, if I had a giant mansion, then I'd probably be spending more time there. That's the one thing I've been thinking about. It's like, it's great to go on vacations, obviously, but you've got this giant piece of property. You'd think you'd spend more time there. At the very least, provide some kind of child care for Scott and let him stay in a comfortable climate in a place that he is used to and feels very comfortable in. But no, Meanwhile, at a hospital, Matt is talking to Dr. Morgan, absolutely fits Matt's type a hundred percent. And uh, Matt is wearing a Dashing turtleneck and parka in the scene.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

It's very eighties. It's core eighties stuff. It's a blue. And it might even be a mock turtleneck. It's a little on the short side. It's not like a full James Bond turtleneck, but yeah, it's a good, it's a blue, like eighties, like I like the slopes, turtleneck,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Oh, yeah. No, absolutely and we're looking into the quarantine room where The guy from earlier is lying and now bruce is there too because it turns out they were both exposed to this Microbe this disease. Matt goes to open the door, but is told by Dr. Morgan, you can't go in there. Basically, you'll be infected too. laughter Laughter

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

face after being told not to open the door it's like peak Matt who the fuck do you think you are lady? I'm a billionaire. I don't like taking orders. Most of the time.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

laughter but Dr. Morgan, like I said, explains that this disease is very contagious. And uh, Matt speaks to Bruce through the glass. He says, how are you feeling old timer? I'm like, old timer? What? What?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

joke between the two of them. Cause like Bruce might be like four days older than Matt or something like that. The other bit was like, if these people with this disease can survive at negative 65 Fahrenheit, then what The hell is going to feel like in 65 positive Fahrenheit in a hospital room? Shouldn't they be surrounded by ice or something like that?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Not only just ice, but how about any kind of hospital equipment whatsoever? They're just in a couple of beds. There's no IVs. There's no monitoring systems. There is nothing attached to them whatsoever. Just some people in in beds in a hospital quarantine room. Bruce says to Matt, I think I've got the bug. And Matt says, I think the bug's got you. And then Matt speaks quietly to Dr. Morgan. How long is he going to be locked up in here? But Dr. Morgan doesn't know. The disease is caused by a microbe that can only exist in the tropics. And they have no drug or serum to fight it. Basically, Bruce is going to die. Got it. That's all you had to say. Suddenly the man in the bed freaks out. He says, No, let me go! And what we learn is he's a professor. And he tells Bruce that men in masks took everything with a helicopter that turned into a jet plane. Which feels a tad on the nose, but the kids know what he's talking about. It must be Switchblade. Yeah.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

even makes a comment, like helicopter that turns into a jet. He must be insane or something along those lines. And Matt's like, I only wish he was. I was kind of curious though, this kind of hit me. As we kind of unfold this, did the professor get infected first while he was doing the research and was trying to work on a cure and quarantining himself? Because we'll see his base in a little bit. Or did he get infected when Miles attacked? In either scenario, it's actually kind of interesting. How it came about

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

I have no idea. He may have been doing gain of function research. Up there in Alaska and uh, things just got out of control. I don't know. We'll see how it goes. Suddenly Bruce collapses and Matt wants to go in to help him. And by the way, this is the second time that Matt has tried to open the quarantine door. And the second time he's reminded that he'll get sick if he goes in. My question to you is, what was he planning to do when he got in there? Help Bruce get back into the bed?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

and die. Yeah, basically like, Oh, I got to help Bruce get back up. is it the quarantine experience they have there is seems a little subpar given what they're dealing with, that anyone could accidentally open that door. Um, like, like, Can you imagine just being like, I need to use the bathroom and you just accidentally open the door Oh, not in

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

there is no bathroom in there. I will point out once again, folks. It is four walls, two beds, two sick people and nothing else. There's nothing else in there.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Untrue. There is a window to watch them.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

right. There's a window. Fortunately, it's a two way windows

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

and an unlocked door. So there we go. Matt storms out of the hospital. Enraged by Dr. Morgan's refusal of his admittance to the quarantine room. With Scott and T Bob in tow maybe not the best idea to bring his son to the infectious disease ward.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

mean, a good idea? No. Par for the course. Yes. Heh.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

moment. I'm going to put that right in there. They get outside. Again, it's very cold out. Matt climbs into Thunderhawk and closes the door, leaving Scott and T Bob outside in the cold, while he connects to the Matt's computer.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. Why do Scott and T Bob have to freeze outside? Oh yeah. That doesn't care. Heh. Heh.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Let us in! Be quiet! Dad's working!

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Welcome to the hospital with the infectious disease.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Well, We entered the agent selection scene. First, he tells the computer that Bruce is unavailable. He's like, select the best agents, but, oh yeah, by the way, Bruce isn't available for this mission, which we've never heard him have to tell the computer that before. The agents selected are Hondo McClain. Alex Sector, who is given a temporary assignment as Firecracker Co Pilot. So I guess Alex can't drive. Can't trust him with Rhino on his own. So put him in with Hondo.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

do you think there was like a recent like, Oh yeah, he's got a DUI and that's on the record that we have to take into account.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

We've never seen him drive unless it's like the ATV.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

well, hold on. We've seen him. fly Rhino down and shoot lasers, like at elephants. So he has been able to drive it out of the jet with parachutes before.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

It could have been pushed out of the jet.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Okay, touche sir. Fair enough. The computer explicitly mentions Alex's zoology experience, kind of made sense from the biological component. it makes more sense that Alex's seeming ability to kill biological things.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yep. The third member of the team is Dusty Hayes.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I, I had a wonder about this. I think it's. Good given there's gonna be water involved and gator makes sense. I will say as an open air vehicle in the snow It doesn't make a whole lot of sense in that regard.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

No, it does not at all. We do not get any Escape scenes, sadly. We don't see them run away at all.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

But I'll say this much this episode is fairly packed So I am I think they made the right choice in terms of like how they plotted this out And I think the only place you could go wrong Probably could have cut would be the mask energized scene.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

because we do cut to Boulder Hill which seems to be just as snowy as Alaska at that point, by the way. It's actually the first time we've seen Boulder Hill in a while. Matt is briefing the team. The professor who is sick, Somehow unfroze microbes that had been frozen for thousands of years when the area was tropical. can we get a Pangea check on this?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. Let's go back to science corner. So I looked this up back in the Cretaceous period. The climate of Alaska was subtropical,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Interesting.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

so this disease would have to be then 65 million years old. So I guess thousands is correct in a very coarse way. So they're, they're, they're scales a little bit off here.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

So we're looking at a 65 million year old virus.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, I don't know if they're gonna have a cure for this one given the amount of evolution that's taken place But hey, well except there's one Here's a bit, it's tantalizing as a detail. We don't find out very much. But the professor was someone who revived microbes frozen in the ice thousands of years ago when the area was tropical. But why was the professor working on this? And I really feel like, you know, like there's a lot of questions that kind of arise, like I think, X Files did an episode like this, where basically like, they had these bugs that had been frozen, and it was global warming causing the microbes to get free, But Adam, who's sponsoring the research?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

It was probably uh, a billionaire who's got his hands in all sorts of different industries building unique devices, maybe vehicles as well. I, I, I don't know. What do you think?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I don't know. It's, it's have to be someone who's interested only in unusual situations. And this is an unusual situation. So we'll, we'll leave that one for the audience.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Okay. Yeah. Audience, if you can figure it out, please reach out to us on Instagram. well It is unclear why venom attacked, but the professor, it turns out was working on a cure. For the disease.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. There's a fun little exchange here. Like Matt's like, this is Bruce's only chance and Dusty jumps into it. It's like, well, what are we chewing the fat for? Let's go. Like they're ready to make it happen.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

However, first they must ascend into the radiation chamber of death to get their helmets. Fortunately, Alaska is not the longest flight we've ever seen mask have to take to get to a destination.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. It's five, six hours tops, depending where they're at.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

So meanwhile, we cut to Scott who is putting snow chains on T Bob. And then Scott ties T Bob to his sled and says, Mush! T Bob doesn't even question it.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

He's been beaten down so much, man. It's so sad. But even, here's the deal, and again, I'm preluding a little bit, but even Scott knows to put snow chains on T Bob for traction. And they're just like Colorado, is cold. I'm like, you put chains on, you put snow tires on T Bob is actually rocking out in the snow after that. Like it was actually a really competent job on Scott's part.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Scott then Tells T Bob that they're going to help dad find Venom. T Bob refuses. But then Scott says, Bruce is sick. He might die. And you're a computer. You have to follow orders. Wow. And

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

for a moment, this was like, this is a Roy Batty prelude again.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

T Bob spins his wheels, sends a ton of snow into Scott's face. Scott is pissed and says T Bob did it on purpose. And T Bob's response? I'm a computer. I just followed orders. And there's your Roy Batty moment of the episode.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Gotta be hard. T Bob's gotta be bucking against his programming a little bit because on one hand, T Bob's ordered to keep Scott safe. But he's probably also ordered to follow Scott's orders. So how do you thread that needle?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah well, it seems that he's tuned to follow Scott's orders more than keep him safe because frequently they're riding off into danger.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Good point.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

giant question mark for why would Alex program T Bob to be like that? But we'll continue to review that throughout the rest of the series. We cut to the mask jet and Thunderhawk gator and firecracker are parked outside the professor's research outpost. what I love that they're wearing their uniforms and they all have these matching t shirts. Puffer jackets over their uniforms. I mean, Matt definitely loves the idea of, uniformity here.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

He does. And I love those puffy jackets. Those were great.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Suddenly, the research outpost is blown up by a fireball from Switchblade, and we come into the Masked Venom, midpoint of the episode, So this is referring back to the great structure we mentioned at the beginning of the podcast here. Like, it's, It's, you could set your clock by the structure. It's really well done. But the masked vehicles are not equipped for the snow. Like, Gator spins out and crashes. Dusty fires the electric ouch, causing Sly to go flying off his motorcycle. There's your Ragdoll Award nominee right there. And then adding insult to injury, Sly gets chased by a car. By a polar bear,

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

So much stuff like in this short period of

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

you're not going to outrun a polar bear. So That's a rag doll award moment because he surely would have been mauled to death by that polar bear.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

100 percent like that is a very dangerous and deadly place to be in at that moment in time I will say like This took me out of the episode for a second. So like, I understand the kind of the need from a story perspective to have masks not equipped for the snow. Cause it really makes for a really awesome battle between the two. They pointed out several times, but given that Colorado is under snow, I figured they'd be equipped with snow tires Sly actually calls out to Cliff. How do you like these spiked tires? So they're really actually cognizant of this.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah. So this is what I was saying earlier that the mechanics are all in place, but the execution is questionable, right? So at your midpoint battle between Mask and Venom, You want to make sure that Mask loses, that Venom gets the upper hand and Mask loses. I was actually just watching an episode of um, Arrow last night, CW's Arrow. And they do the same, in the best episodes, they do the same exact thing. Arrow and his team, at the midpoint of the episode, go up against the bad guy, and they're or outplayed, or something like that happens. That's just the structure of a good action TV series.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

then in the end, they're gonna have the final battle at the end of each episode, and the good guys will be triumphant. So The structure is great. The fact that the mask vehicles can't drive in snow is absurdly bad for a team based in Boulder, Colorado. We're getting close to being great here. We're in the, the okay to good category here. But anyways, back to the battle firecracker and jackhammer are going at it, but. Firecracker also can't handle the snow and spins out onto an ice sheet. And Dusty says, I got to use my think tank.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. Look, again, snow tires aside, this is a lot of fun. Uh, Hondo calls out the spiked tires on Jackhammer, and Alex is like, gives him a rather unfair advantage I'd say. And I'm like, no, Alex, it's called preparing for winter. You should know about this. Alex complains because of how much firecracker is twisting. He's not able to aim properly. And to be fair, we actually have established that Alex is another great shot because he, he like took out those elephants while saving Scott a few years. Well, I didn't kill the elephants, but

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

He missed them terribly.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

he missed them terribly. But he was able to like not kill Scott. So I actually thought again, if you, if you accept the, the leap basically that the snow tires aren't there, they make the snow a credible hindrance to mask.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Dusty does in fact, have a pretty good idea after putting on his think tank. He half transforms into boat mode and uses the jets that propel the boat to push him out of the snow bank. Good move.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

yeah, this is cool. And this is like, I think they leaned into the toy, like, Oh, what if we did this and we've seen Gator partially transform in the past to use the freeze ray. So someone is actually watching the past episodes and must have the toys on their desk.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah, it's also terrible design that you can't use the freeze ray unless it's in boat mode. It's a great, it's a great weapon.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, that's a question back to mask or to Matt, I should say at that point in time.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Well, We have a Switchblade Thunderhawk battle in the sky as usual. Switchblade fires what seems like snowballs at Thunderhawk. They immediately freeze and Thunderhawk is forced to make a crash landing.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I really liked this a lot. So we have commented many times that a Camaro flying. Has questionable aerodynamics. We're taking a vehicle that's on the edge of flying and then further hindering it by icing it. I think it's a great plan. Jetliners have this problem all the time. So I think it was a cool move just to kind of lure him in and then basically use. Thunderhawk's PORA aerodynamics against it in a big way.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Counterpoint. As we have established in this series, Thunderhawk cannot, should not be able to fly under any reason whatsoever. It is, it has some sort of, it must be radiation, nuclear propulsion going on that really allows it to overcome gravity in an unnatural way. So that being the case, I would assume a few snowballs would not be able to knock it out of the sky. Okay.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, that's fair. The gullwing doors, I guess, aren't providing the lift I would expect.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

It also must be freezing up there in the sky, flying around with your doors open. Yeah,

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

that Matt was actually wearing his parka. And it's like, oh yeah,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Miles having taken out Thunderhawk then has venom fire at the ice sheet to cause cracks and that kind of sends all the mask vehicles split off into these perfect little icebergs, perfectly sized, by the way. to fit each vehicle.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

it was a smart move on Miles's part. Cause Cliff was just about to engage with Firecracker and he's like, No, fire At the ice.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Venom is victorious, PJ.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

You know what I thought immediately? This is a great fucking time to finish the job. these guys are all sitting ducks. All you have to do is actually shoot out the icebergs from underneath them.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

I completely agree. well, Firecracker starts to slide off its little iceberg. It's about to go into the freezing water, along with Alex and Hondo.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

was like, we must hold it. If we get wet in This cold, we'll be dead in minutes. And I was like, yes, fact. It's. And those are good steaks. I like those.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Those are excellent stakes. Our characters are going to die. Yeah. There's no lifter to save them. There is jackrabbit, but we won't talk about that. It's great steak. So it leads me to ask the question, PJ, what's going to happen next?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I don't know! I just don't know! It's so scary!

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

We'll find out after these messages.

Hold on. There's a battle we have to tend to. Be right back. We got them. Now back to the show.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

And we're back when we left you Alex and Hondo, we're about to be turned into icicles in the freezing water, but Matt comes up with a plan. It's a bit convoluted. If I'm being honest, but Matt uses spectrum laser and then Hondo uses blaster and they finagle away for Matt to pull firecracker. Basically what they're doing is creating a train of icebergs with Matt and the lead using Thunderhawks jets to pull them all back together. So again, it's a little convoluted. I am curious why Alex couldn't just use Jackrabbit. Now, they probably would have sacrificed the vehicles, so You know, there is some logic here. But, it works.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

a little convoluted, but They use firecrackers like spinning wheel of death that ninja star tire they fire it Back at dusty's ice block and that's what they're going to use to actually anchor it again i think jack rabbit would have been the right call here to actually get the line over rather than throwing it but whatever

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

They're using the vehicles.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yes! They're using the vehicles. They're using the toy features on the vehicles.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Matt turns on the jets of Thunderhawk and they head back to shore.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

yeah, it's like, this is fun. I do have a shot in there that I'm a little concerned about the length of Matt's jet wash. Cause it's like nearly reaching all the way to the front of firecracker, which would start to melt it. But I was like, ah,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Not just melt Firecracker, but also singe the winch wire

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Oh yeah, good call.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

or melt the iceberg that Firecracker's floating on.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Excellent points, sir.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

I have many concerns about that move. Meanwhile, we cut to Scott and T Bob and they are out in the icy tundra. And Scott sees some tire tracks and realizes that it's their own tracks. They are lost. Out in the icy tundra. And that's what happens when you go off into the icy tundra without a map, Scott.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I was also, it's also what happens when your father takes off to fight terrorists without leaving your child in someone's care. Or at least making sure he's at the hotel. Because

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

that's the big thing, is like, he didn't even tell Scott, hey, stay at the hotel. He hasn't seen Scott to my recollection in this whole episode.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

no, not since the hospital.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

since the hospital where he ignored him, he brought him to the infectious disease ward, then left him outside of Thunderhawk. From the way I'm piecing this together, Matt got into Thunderhawk outside the hospital and drove away. Leaving Scott and T Bob in the freezing cold parking lot, wondering where to go and what to do next. Because they hadn't even checked into a hotel yet.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

help Bruce. That's the only thing we can do. I Was wondering if they could follow their own tracks back. Or the idea that they'd been already snow covered.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Your guess is as good as mine.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

uh, Dusty uses backlash to melt the ice on Thunderhawk. Is that possible? Is that within the guidelines of what backlash can do?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I mean what Dusty says specifically is let's see what a sonic boom will do which feels like a The wrong tool to be using like this is definitely a hammer in a screwdriver situation it's using backlash to shake the ice off which I guess would you know? He's trying to count on it the shaking creating enough heat as well, but not enough to just destroy the vehicle So I'm like, ah fine You

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Okay.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I thought was interesting was we've seen three uses of masks at this ep like, so far. We've had Spectrum Laser, we've had Blaster, and now we've got Backlash. So, I'm like, alright! The writers are paying attention.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

you for listening to us and for. Somehow receiving this transmission back in 1985 and taking our notes about actually using masks and mask episodes.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. My one thing though, is that it I think they just wanted to use backlash in this moment, but actually this would have been a decent time for spectrum Because microwaves, despite Having relatively low energy, like compared to like, other parts of the, of the electromagnetic spectrum they can be tuned. I mean, That's how microwave oven works. They're tuned To the residents of water. They could have tuned spectrum to actually emit that frequency and melt the water, but whatever.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

That's fine. Backlash worked. But meanwhile, Scott can't use T Bob's radio because it's frozen over. T Bob is absolutely freaking out and begins building an igloo so they can survive the night, which is actually not a bad idea, T Bob.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. Actually creating a igloo is a great idea. Ice is an amazing insulator and that given that T Bob is actually probably a walk walking heat source, he could keep them warm. I found it weird that radio being jammed up with ice though. So we've gotten confirmation the radio has been reinstalled, which is good. We also Know that T Bob is waterproof, given many episodes of him going to the drink. So like, how did the ice get in there? Did the water get in when Scott was fiddling with him?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah, T Bob would be much more functional if Scott would stop installing things in him. But, you know, Scott says that, forget about the night. They should be prepared to spend the next six months up there. What are they gonna eat for six months? What are they gonna do up there?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I, it's a little bit overboard, but I get what they were doing. I was looking this up. polar night in Alaska generally goes from mid November to mid January so I guess they're close enough to that that it's a real concern. this also means that either Matt has Scott out of school, Or this is how they spend Thanksgiving together.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

In an igloo with his robot But don't worry. It's okay cuz Scott has an idea They will use t bob's infrared sensors to find a source of heat Aha, so that's good The writers are using the fact that Matt's gonna look for a heat source And t bob's gonna look for a heat source and that's how you're gonna bring them all together. So again Nice work writers

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, that was a nice move. Just like, oh well, well motivated, basically.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

T Bob's sensors lead them to a massive venom base. And uh, it's like this giant glass dome.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, the dome is amazing. it's really big. And uh, I also thought it was in this moment, a nice use of spectrum. Cause I got Matt flying overhead, Actually like doing the scans on the place. So you know, I guess I get, I keep getting reinforced that the writer of this episode just really gets the premise. Like it's like what you've said all along. cool transforming vehicles and it's mask powers. I did. think there was a little assumption here that Venom thinks the base is so well hidden that doesn't need radar. So I was like, okay

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

yeah, I mean, Alaska's big. And the icy tundra is wide. But, it's like this contemporary Architecture, glass, nearly geodesic dome. And there's a shot from the outside that actually makes it look like a mall. It looks like there's escalators in there. Miles still has not lost the flair for the dramatic. When he builds a base, he puts a lot of thought into it.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

It's very 80s, man. It's very 80s and he's like employing all the techniques of the Galleria in making his bases.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Matt calls the team and tells them to meet him. And this time. The team has put on snow chains.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, this was, so Dusty's got this line and he says, Them snow chains are big and ugly, but I bet they do the job. Which I thought was actually a really interesting line. Choice both word wise. And so they're actually don't have snow chains on them per se. They've got toe chains acting as makeshift like snow chains, which I was like, Oh, okay, that's cool. That means that, they're using the chains for instance, that they just trained with doing the whole train maneuver and cut them up and said, Hey, we got to use these instead. So it's like, okay. nice way to kind of cinch it together.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Inside Venom's hideout, Sly tells Miles that he wants to get out of here. There's polar bears all around. When can we stop melting down all this ice? It turns out Miles is melting the ice so he can get enough of the disease microbes for a permanent breeding colony. Then the world will have a need. For the life saving serum he stole from the professor. This is hands down the best Venom plan I've ever seen.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

A hundred percent. Brilliant plan. kind of on The cynical side on commentary though. Cause I mean, in some sense, Miles's plan is to start a pharmaceutical company

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

to like sell the cure, right. Or, uh, or at least ransom the cure. I think it was actually kind of cool cause Miles is actually doing the research by peering through the microscope. And it hints at those like Miles greater scientific abilities because he's he is supposed to have helped to create the masks. Sly's line is also awesome. I'm not sure if you remember this one.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah, you figure to make people sick, then pay for the cure. I like it. It's, it's, it's good. It's, it's, It's a good line. It's a good line. Really, what he's doing is creating a plandemic.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

yes, this is Miles's plan.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Much like Pfizer did. You all know what I'm talking about. Okay, anyways. Well, Meanwhile, Matt and the team are looking down at the dome from a cliff on high above the scene.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. And it's a fun little exchange. It's here. Like Dusty's like, who we, that's a big operation. I wish I'd remember to bring an army with me. To which Hondo's like, mine's in my other suit. And I thought it was actually kind of nice for a staff like they actually consider this a credible threat and maybe they think there's more folks in there. It's more heavily defended than it might be. But I think we've talked about in the past what makes episodes work isn't when Venom's being this bumbling set of idiots. It's when they're a credible threat. And There's someone to overcome and that's, that makes for good episodes.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

And that's just good, writing and, and creating strong drama. The bad guys always need to be stronger than anyone. And more threatening than the good guys. Because when the good guys eventually overcome those bad guys, they're able, they have to step up to like heroic levels to defeat that, right? The Rebels versus the Empire, perfect example of that. There is no way you could ever defeat the Galactic Empire. But a ragtag band of freedom fighters manages to find the one little Achilles heel in there to defeat them. That's how you create great drama. If the empire is a bunch of bumbling idiots who had no idea how to keep things together, then it'd be easy for anyone to come and destroy them. So that's what's happening here with Venom. So yes, good job writer. I've got to believe this is Chuck Lorre writing this episode.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I think we're going to try to assign every great episode to Chuck Lorre at this point in time. Assault on Liberty, the Rotex and now Cold Fever.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

well, meanwhile, T Bob gets accosted by a polar bear. He gets hit. He goes sliding down a hill, turning into one of those giant snowballs as he goes. And then uh, Scott's chasing after him down the hill, but he stops suddenly when a giant shadow lurks over him. Before we find out what happens next, we go back to Mask, and they're watching this giant snowball careen down the hill, and it goes crashing through the glass wall of Venom's hideout. And again, like I said, I like the contemporary architecture, but maybe Regular old glass wasn't the best exterior for their secret hideout

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

mean, it is an interesting choice when you make glass your primary building material in a place where ice can break off easily. I did actually like, cause I, they're actually in the middle of planning stuff out. When this stuff goes down, so like he's Matt's in the middle of saying, Hey, when I've dusty created diversion and like, it seems like they're actually formulating something when, conveniently a snowball diversion actually happens.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah, and utilizing Scott and T Bob In the plot for a reason that actually makes sense right

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

So T Bob rolls to a stop Inside Venom's hideout all the snow falls off and then we see Miles pick up T Bob by his legs T Bob kind of is able to squirm away Someone catch that robot Says Miles and this is like the first time we've seen any contact between T Bob and Venom And I'm just curious like what is? Miles Think this robot is

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. It's a good question. So credit where credit is due miles must be amazingly strong. To pick up T pop like that, because that is a solid hunk of metal.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah, and by the way I'm, I am looking at the rundown for the first time and uh, you, you correctly note to me that T Bob interacted with Venom in the Death Stone there on the docks of Grand Lake and in Book of Power as well, right? So they have seen each other before. I feel this was the the first real kind of like hands on interaction that Miles had with T Bob though.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, and it, and again, we're going to talk about this with Scott in a second, but, either Miles has a lot of senior moments or he doesn't like kids and robots, or maybe a more world building explanation is that, So much of this is common in this world that Miles, it's like, Oh like, you know, I forget pretty easily, like this robot versus identical robot. That looks exactly like it. Like, so, It, it's an interesting question just because why legitimately would you not remember an egg shaped robot?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah. And a simple line being like, you again.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. All

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

brings Scott in and says, this kid was outside spying on us. And Scott's like, leave me alone. I'm not telling you nothing. Suddenly he comes like a street urchin from the 1930s. I ain't telling you nothing, mister.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

It's Dickensian almost uh,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

But it all stops when they uh, when they witness mask uh, on the way and Scott wriggles free and he takes off.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

The exchange between miles and Scott was actually interesting. Cause he asks him straight up. Who are you? How did you find us? It says, which like Scott had said, leave me alone. I'm not telling you nothing, but. Mask hadn't shown up and Scott had revealed his name, Miles would then know about Matt. I mean, that might be Enough to put all the pieces together. If he doesn't know already.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

As you pointed out earlier, though, Scott is wearing a different outfit, it would be very easy for the elderly Miles to not recognize him. I remember a boy in a blue shirt with a strange kind of yellow and dark red neckline. But you, boy, in this red parka.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Heh.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

We now have the end of episode Masked Venom battle. Gator takes on Jackhammer but Cliff damages the electric Ouch!

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I know.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Hondo uses blaster to cause steam to rise up in front of Piranha and when the steam clears There are several polar bears standing in front of Sly The lead polar bear swats at Sly sending him flying and we have another Slyrax ragdoll award nominee

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I want to point out those polar bears would have murdered Sly.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

he's dead. he's dead. twice in this matt lands inside the base and scott cries dad and matt says what are you doing here and they actually hug Like a father and son are supposed to do

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

So sweet. Matt tells him just get into the Thunderhawk and stay put. And Scott's like, yes sir, come to think of it, where's T Bob? And it kind of leads into a kind of fun little interstitial.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah well, T Bob is sort of coming out of a bunch of overturned barrels and T Bob doesn't know where anyone is and says, I've got to be brave. I've got to save Scott. Well,

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

To that conflicting orders that he has inside that he like, cares about Scott, and it actually is going to motivate him for what he's about to do at the base.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

what's so interesting about this finale is it's doing a good job maintaining momentum and energy because it's cutting from one beat to another beat to another beat. The way that you'd want to put together like a good solid multi character piece. Set piece, action scene, because then we go to a gator needs help again. So firecracker blasts a cliff full of snow and causes it to fall on jackhammer a note that we actually haven't seen the old Shoot the sides of a canyon cause boulders to fall down maneuver in several episodes. So this is a nice snowy Return to that

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

and a nice inversion, because it's Mask doing it, not T And Alex has his crack shot skills. Now that he's got like good tires on, he's able to take out that cliff of snow.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

right And now meanwhile, we actually have Miles cornered. He's backing up towards the hole in the glass, holding like this big giant container of microbes. And meanwhile, T Bob is backing up at the same time towards the hole from outside, and they collide. Miles, stumbles and drops the big container. And Matt tells T Bob to grab the serum that for some reason is hanging in like a cork jar around Miles neck. Which, I'm sorry, writer, I'm gonna have to ding you on that one.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

that was a weird choice there.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

T Bob gets it, Miles and Venom escape, again Sly Being chased by polar bears runs over to jackhammer hops in and they escape so PJ mask is one yet again and Matt has set some sort of a bonfire in a pit Inside the venom base and they're just throwing all these giant barrels of I assume microbes into the fire

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I was wondering how fucking heavy were these giant barrels, cause, and how strong, cause like a metal barrel with nothing in it is super heavy. And so Matt would be like this complete flex move for throwing them in over his head by himself into this pit.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yep. Absolutely. And T Bob says, mission accomplished, sir. And then he collapses.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

But yeah, most of the time. It would be that everyone would laugh at this moment. What we've seen in the past is kind of this comedy. But actually they all have genuine concern for T Bob, which I Actually thought was kind of nice.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah. For the first time, T Bob is actually getting some respect.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yes.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Back at the hospital. Bruce is okay. Quick question though, what about the professor? We never see or hear from him again.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, alright. Look, man I think we've established that Professor was in fact working for Tracker Industries. And it was really important that someone outside of MASC just not appear again.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

the professor's family got a nice bouquet of flowers. Signed by Matt's secretary.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I mean, it would be morbid for kids, but are we basically to understand that the professor died because he was exposed for too long? Or like,

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

No idea. But if he did survive, Matt would want to get him Away from everyone and anyone as soon as possible because he doesn't want to give away the fact that he's been having this guy do research on this deadly microbe. If he's alive, he's never gonna be seen again. His family is informed he's dead. He might not be dead. He's hidden somewhere in the bowels of Boulder Hill. well, Anyways, like I said, Bruce is okay, and Matt explains to Bruce that T Bob did it all. He wrecked Venom's dome, and he saved the serum.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, there's a nice little exchange in here. It was like T Bof, any hero would have done it. and Hondo's like, well, it's a good thing you did. We'd hate to lose old Bruce here, which I know what is up with that. It's is it like an inside joke that they're doing here?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Bruce is actually really, really old. But he just takes really good care of himself?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

maybe. Yeah. It was, it's just like weird to keep poking on that one.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Bruce says, True friends are those who would face death to prevent it. So we have a sadoism, which we haven't heard in a while. Seems pretty straightforward though,

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

It's, it's really straightforward. Like I'm really hesitant to call it a sadism other than Bruce is saying thank you in a somewhat elaborate way, but not that elaborate.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah. and it seems as though we're going to avoid a Buddy Hawks nominee. However,

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

But at the last second, he

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

I think that was a compliment. And then he winks. That is a clear It cleared BuddyHawk's nomination.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

winks and then to show how much they're influencing the kids Scott winks as well. Huh?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah. Yep. The same exact movement, like the same exact movement with his kind of hand and thumb on his chin And a wink of the eye. It's in the same eye too. Like he mimics Hondo exactly.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Scott is learning a lot of lessons from a lot of people, and I get, this is the family he's got. Uncle Hondo, and Uncle Bruce, Uncle Dusty, and whatever Gloria is. But my god, what are you teaching this kid?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah. But that's the end of the episode. We cut to the more you know. We are still in Alaska. It seems we're inside some dwelling of some sort. There's a fireplace going and T Bob is putting giant matches into this unlit fireplace. Now, I don't mean like those kinds of oversized long matches that you might use. I'm talking about matches, which are the size pretty much of T Bob's arms. Like they are massive matches. I don't understand who has matches like this, but T Bob's got him. And he's told by Scott that it's dangerous to play with matches. Then T Bob's hat catches fire. We cut to outside where Scott has T Bob's head in a snow bank and T Bob is repeating, I will not touch matches. I will not think of matches.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I will not look at matches it's okay. I mean, Like I get the, the lesson that T Bob is saying, but you should all recognize it's the wrong lesson according to the actions that just occurred. Okay. It actually has nothing to do with the matches. Like it's like his hat caught fire because the hat basically was near the fireplace. if someone else had lit the fire and T Bob had. Never touched the matches. he still would have his hat on fire if he wasn't paying attention to the, where the clothing is. So like wrong lesson guys. Like how about don't stand too close to fires?

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

That's a good one. And we fade out, and that is episode 20 of Mask. Father of the Year nominees?

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I, for me it's the beat in between where Matt has Scott and T Bob outside of the car of Thunderhawk. And then Scott's alone. Like, like what, whatever that beat is, is the father of the year. Cause either he said something or he said nothing. And regardless, Scott was just. On his own.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

The Implied Abandonment is also my nominee as well, so we're on the same page there. Buddy Hawks nominee, I think we have the one.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

it again, this is, we've seen a few episodes where we haven't had a Buddy Hawks award or like Nothing clear. Like, So it felt like we had escaped that gravitational pull of that trope. But then the last line of the episode, like pulled from the jaws of victory, Hondo for a second one.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

And you pointed out last episode, how few episodes Hondo is actually in. So if he's in 21 episodes, he's received two Buddy Hawks awards. you know, per uh, per appearance, he may end up winning.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

I hope not. I hope like that would be, cause what's funny about it is this, and it kind of makes me wonder if it's the same writer. Cause the last time was actually the Rotex episode.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Oh yeah. Which was a very good episode as well.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah, great episode. And so it was, Hondo also doing a number on the Sato ism in that episode and repeating that trope here. So I, I, again, I kind of wonder, is it the same writer? Cause it's a good, they're both really great episodes.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

I'm officially deputizing our fans to go out there and figure out who wrote these episodes. Since as you all know, PJ and I are incapable of doing actual research. Well, PJ is great with the science corner, legal corner, math corner, all the corners. But in terms of mask itself, we do have a blind spot, which is odd for a, for a mask podcast.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

it is, they don't make it easy though. I think this is like somewhere in the annals of history.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Roy Batty award, I think we have fully established that T Bob is questioning his programming and is beginning to show his true intentions.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

for me, there's actually two moments For a Roy Batty. If I'm taking all of Roy Batty into account, one is the snow in the face. I'm just following my programming, which was clearly T Bob doing an F you to Scott. The other Roy Batty moment is when he gets up and it says, I must be brave. I must. Rescue Scott, which is kind of That, oh, Roy Batty at the end of Blade Runner.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

yep, so I like this introduction of this new this new award It's definitely coming to life here. And then finally the Slyrax ragdoll award there's two opportunities where he should have been mauled to death by polar bears, but for some reason did not

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Yeah. Can't pick between the two. I mean, they're very, They're very close. Like, So yeah, Sly Rax gets his own award yet again. And he's the only one of the Venom agents, basically, that's getting tossed around in this episode.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah well, I'll give it to the second appearance only because there's like three or four polar bears at that point, which is like death is assured in that moment

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Say your prayers, Sly.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

That is it. That's episode 20 and uh, way to go mask writer or writers, whoever put this one together. You did a good job.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Good episode and, and I think that, If, I think I said this to you on text, but you know, if you had this episode, if you had Assault on Liberty and you had the Rotex. And you thought, those are the only Mask episodes you saw. I'd be like, wow, this is a really good show, and it really hangs together, and it makes sense, and it's well plotted, it makes sense even as a toy commercial, it's fun, the characters Are well designed, they're well done, that's the thing, it's like, oh like, yeah, this is what we really love about it.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:

Yeah. Completely. I agree. A hundred percent. Let's see if episode 21 will hold up to that standard. It is called a Mardi Gras mystery. I wonder why Matt's going to Mardi Gras. I wonder if Gloria will be there. The mask team enjoys a New Orleans Mardi Gras, but finds Venom there trying to steal the formula to a super fuel.

pj_1_08-15-2024_110338:

Alright buckle up folks, uh, we're going to be discussing a little bit about what Mardi Gras is what usually goes on there and a few other things.

adam_1_08-15-2024_100338:
